The Rolly Poly in Action

Here's video of our little rolly poly in action. P.S. It took WAY too long to figure out how to download this clip from my camera and then save it on my computer! I wish I had a Mac... imovie is MUCH more user friendly than the program I'm using.

Rolly Poly and More Excitement

About a week or two ago I spied Ruby rolling from her back to her tummy. Now she's a rolling machine.

She refuses to be contained to her blanket space and frequently rolls right off and keeps on going.

She is still eating rice cereal or should I say making a mess of it? Actually, I think she is starting to enjoy it more. Tomorrow we get to add baby oatmeal to her diet. Fun times!

She's still something of a small fry compared to my friend's babies, but her leg rolls and Buddha belly tell me that she's quite healthy.

Isn't our little nugget adorable?
Now that she's 5 months old, we started to get serious about sleep training. I dreaded it at first, but it has turned out to be MUCH less painful than I expected. I recommend Dr. Richard Ferber's book to all mommys and daddys who have difficulty sleep training their babies.

After just 2 nights Ruby is now sleeping longer at night and during the day. Both Brandon and I are happier too, because she is learning to put herself to sleep instead of relying on sleep associations that we generate (i.e. rocking, nursing, etc). Vacation will probably mess up her schedule, but I'm confident that we can get back on track quickly once we get home. Thanks a million Lesley for loaning me your copy of Dr. Ferber's book.

Happy Father's Day!

Daddy,

I couldn't let the day end with out letting you know how much you mean to me. I love it when you get down on the floor and play with me. I love it when you sing and talk to me in silly voices. I love it when you push me in my stroller and carry me around in the Baby Bjorn. I love to hear you offer family prayer and most of all I love to snuggle with you. Thanks for being such an important part of my life. I'm lucky to have such a great daddy. Happy first Father's Day.

Love,
Ruby

Dear Ruby

Dear Ruby,
The other day I read a blurb in a magazine about a woman who found motherhood unfulfilling. She said that after she made the decision to stay home she regretted it almost immediately. The boredom overwhelmed her. How sad.
I just want you to know that staying home with you has been one of the happiest seasons of my life. It may not be glamorous, but it's incredibly fulfilling. I love tickling you and trying to make you smile. I love dressing you and nursing you. I love ignoring my house work to take you for walks. And I love carting you around with me in public. I may look like a hot mess half of the time we're together, but you always look adorable. I am so proud to be your mommy and I gush a little inside every time someone stops to tell me how beautiful you are.
There are times when it is difficult to be a mommy (like when you're upset and I don't know how to help you), but there are also times when it was hard to be a teacher. Because I made the choice to stay home and raise you I don't get a paycheck anymore, but I get hours and hours of moments with you-- priceless. My house may not be as clean as it once was, but at the end of the day the dust and toys remind me that I'm doing something far more important than cleaning. You are what completes me. You are what makes my life meaningful and I feel blessed to be able to spend so much time with you.
love,
Mommy

Promised Pictue Update

Sleeping beauty...

Someone has found her hands. Most of the time she can't decide if she wants to fall asleep sucking her fist, binky, or both at the same time.

At four months Ruby tried her first taste of rice cereal.

Can you tell that she's not a fan?

Somebody has found a new use for my nursing pillow.

Mr. Scout and Little Miss Ruby are the best of buddies (probably because she can't chase him around the house or pull his tail yet).

Family visit

This past week Brandon and I took Ruby to Utah. Brandon had some business meetings and my mom was going to the temple for the first time, so we planned to come play for a few extra days.

It was an amazing experience to escort my mom through the temple and be with my family as we did some proxy sealing work for close family members that have passed. I'm so proud of my mom and the other strong women in our family. What a blessing it was to share that experience with her, Brandon, and my grandma-- I probably won't get many days like that in my lifetime.

While we were up there Little Ruby also got to meet her great grandparents (Brandon's side of the family), shop with Mimi (Great Grandma Ruby) and Grammy (Grandma Dona), take two sets of family pictures, and play with her aunts and uncles.

She barely had any tummy time, because someone always wanted to hold her. I can't say I love Utah (that's putting it mildly), but I'd really love to live closer to family.

Every time I see how much they love our little Ruby girl I wish that she could spend more time with them. Thanks to our family for making this week so memorable. We'll be back...
